How to Use VPN on Xbox One Through Your PC

If you have a Windows PC that has both an ethernet connection and Wi-Fi, you can use it to create a VPN-protected ad-hoc hotspot. This method involves setting a VPN up on your PC, and then sharing your wired internet connection over Wi-Fi.

Here’s how to connect your Xbox One to a VPN through a PC:

  1. Begin by setting up a VPN up on your Windows PC. Many VPN service providers offer native Windows apps that automate the entire process.
  2. From the Windows desktop, select Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot.
  3. Click the dropdown menu under Share my Internet connection from, and select your VPN-protected internet connection.
  4. Write down the network name and network password.
  5. Switch the Mobile hotspot toggle On.
  6. Connect your Chromecast to the Wi-Fi network that you wrote down in Step 4.
  7. Your Chromecast is now connected to the internet through your Windows VPN.

How to Connect Your Chromecast to VPN Through a Mac

Macs can create ad-hoc hotspots in much the same way as Windows PCs. If you have a Mac, you can set up a VPN on your machine, and then share a wired internet connection over Wi-Fi. Connect your Chromecast to the Wi-Fi network, and it will receive all the benefits of a VPN.

Here’s how you can connect your Xbox One to a VPN through your Mac:

  1. Start by setting up your Mac to connect through a VPN.
  2. Navigate to System Preferences > Sharing.
  3. Select Internet Sharing.
  4. Click the Share your connection from dropdown menu, and select Ethernet.
  5. Click the To computers using dropdown menu, and select Wi-Fi.
  6. Click Wi-Fi Options.
  7. Enter a network name, channel, security type, password, and click OK.
  8. Click the box next to Internet Sharing to place a check mark in it.
  9. Click Start.
  10. Connect your Chromecast to the Wi-Fi network you set up in step seven.

How to Use VPN on Chromecast With a VPN Router

This option doesn’t require a computer, but it does call for a router that’s capable of connecting directly to a VPN. A lot of routers have this capability, but it’s far from universal.

Some routers can’t connect to VPNs, but are compatible with custom firmware like DD-WRT and Tomato. If you have one of these routers, you can install the custom firmware to enable VPN protection.

When you set your router up to connect to a VPN, every device on your network receives the same VPN protection. That includes your Chromecast, in addition to any computers, game consoles, and other devices that you have connected to the internet.

The specific steps required to set up a VPN router differ from one device to another, but this is what the general process looks like:

  1. Log in to the control panel of your router.
  2. Follow the procedure set out by your VPN provider to set your router up for that particular service.

Your router settings will look different from this if you don’t have a TP-Link router. You will typically need to locate a tab or page called Basic, Network, or WAN Setup. On this page, you will need to enter whatever information that your VPN provided to you when you signed up. If you don’t have the necessary information, contact your VPN service provider.

  1. Connect your Chromecast to your router. Your Chromecast, and every other device on your network, will all connect through your VPN instead of directly to the internet.
